Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips for Rose Mallow

H. 'Lady Baltimore' needs rich soils, consistant moisture and full sun. Good air circulation may help to prevent disease. Cut back stems to about 3-4" in Autumn. Mulch during winter to protect roots from frost and prune in early spring for bushier growth. Best effect when planted in groupings of 3 or more. Plant in areas that remain moist such as the banks of a stream or pond, shrub beds or entranceways for most dramatic effect.

Interesting Notes

H. 'Lord Baltimore' and 'Lady Baltimore' rose mallow were joined last year by two new hybrids bred by bachelor brothers in Iowa. As the pair couldn't agree on names for their new cultivars, not until one brother passed away were the hybrids named and made available by the surviving brother.stowegarden.org

My "Lady Baltimore" hardy hibiscus has been providing me with the pleasure of "tissue paper like" pink blossoms with a deep red eye, opening 6 to 8 inches in diameter early in the morning. As the morning progresses the blossoms tightly twist to a close. The blooms are short lived lasting 1 to 3 days, but they are quickly replaced by a profusion of new buds. The hardy hibiscus bloom period generally lasts 2 to 4 weeks. roxburyfarmgarden.com
