Susan's interest in gardening was fostered by her Mother's membership in 'Garden Gate Garden Club" beginning in the late 1960's. Watering houseplants and deadheading pansies were some of first gardening chores. Susan's horticultural career began as a senior in high school working at D. Ferri Greenhouses in Boothwyn, PA growing pointsettias, forcing spring bulbs, and starting 1.2 million geraniums from seed. After high school came three years of landscape installation and maintenance work and two years of Agricultural College before she was accepted into the Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Training Program. Upon graduating, Susan came to work at Gateway as our landscape foreman, followed by managing the Garden Center for its first three years. In 1990 Susan went to work on a private estate in Montchanin, Delaware for 6 ½ years, before returning to Longwood Gardens as an employee on the Flower Garden Walk in 1996. Susan returned to garden center sales at J. Franklin Styers Nursery in 2005 and then was welcomed back to Gateway Garden Center in the spring of 2009 as our custom potting designer. Susan's experience at Longwood both as a gardener and designer of the Gardener's Tree, developed her sense of style that she brings to our Custom Potting Department.
