Athyrium x 'Branford Rambler'

Running Lady Fern

This is a good, frisky new fern from John Mickel of Bradford, CT. It has been billed as a running painted fern, but we have found it to be mostly green with red tones along the stem. Even so, it is a lovely and vigorous plant with delicate bright green fronds; a lively groundcover that is very easy to grow and not at all fussy; a deciduous, noninvasive creeper that fills in quickly, but doesn't take over. Hybridized by the legendary Nick Nicou, of Branford, CT.

Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

This cross between A. filix-femina and A. niponicum thrives in humus-rich woodlands and moist woods in acidic to neutral, moist, well-drained soils. Spreads by shallow rhizomes. Propagate by dividision in spring. Bestused as a groundcover in the woodlandor rock garden or as an edge or border in the shaded garden.

Interesting Notes

This hybrid Japanese painted fern is a cross between A. felix femina and A. niponicum 'Pictum'. It is a running, deciduous fern that features upright, dark green fronds growing to 24" with maroon to red central stipes (stems). Dense foliage forms an attractive ground cover for moist, shady spots when plants are massed. Kemper Center for Home Gardening
