Ajuga reptans 'Burgandy Glow'

Bugleweed

Like all Ajugas, 'Burgundy Glow' makes for an excellent ground cover in sun or shade. It features tricolored foliage with shades of cream, pink, and green. Blue flowers on 6" spikes arise above the foliage in late spring. In mass plantings, the flower effect can be very dramatic, like a blue wave. In fall, older leaves exhibit a deep bronze coloring while the younger leaves contrast well with lighter hues of rose.

Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips for Bugleweed

Ajuga reptans is easy to grow and easy to transplant. It prefers a well-drained shady location but also performs well in sunny areas. Soil should contain organic matter and have good drainage. A light, early spring fertilization is sufficient. Divide when clumps become overcrowded. This is a fast-growing plant that will spread by stolons to form an attractive ground cover. Larger plantings may be mowed on a high mower setting to remove spent flower spikes and to tidy the appearance of the planting. String trimmers and hedge shears are also effective for removing spent flower spikes. Space plants 6-9" apart for quick cover. Ajuga is relatively care-free, however, it can spread, particularly in lawns. It is susceptible to crown rot. To limit damage from crown rot, rake debris regularly and keep the bed as clean as possible. Dig out unwanted plants to keep within boundaries. Avoid soggy conditions.
