Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips for Tsuma Gaki Japanese Red Maple (Red Nail)

Prune as needed to keep overall shape of tree. Pruning is best done in mid-winter when branch structure is fully visible and to prevent excessive bleeding that can occur with spring pruning.

Interesting Notes

Tsuma Gaki Japanese Red Maple is one of the most interesting maples in the early spring.  The leaves emerge chartreuse with a dark red edge. Tsuma Gaki means "Red Nail" and the partly folded newly emerging leaves look like the claws of the dragon.
